Where It All Started

According to the historic report we were required to purchase to obtain permits for refurbishing the property, Dr Levi Cooper Lane and “a Dr. Smiley” were listed as the original owners. When we had the cottages on the Carmel Heritage House and Garden Tour, the historic society asked if we knew anything about anyone that had lived in any of the houses. A quick Google search revealed that Dr Levi Cooper Lane had died several years before the property was even purchased.

This created a mystery that needed solving. So my sister, my niece, and I spent four days at the Hall of Records in Salinas combing through the old deed books until we found and copied every linking deed to the property.

The late Pat Hathaway, whose archive holds thousands of historical negatives of the area, had long believed the two lady doctors that commissioned the photos of Log Haven were the true first owners. The deeds we found proved he was right. The house was first owned and built by two lady doctors, Virginia Smiley and Lucia Lane.

Over the decades, the property passed through remarkable hands. Cary de Angulo, a Johns Hopkins trained physician, lived in Log Haven before divorcing and moving to Switzerland, becoming Carl Jung's translator and transcriber. She married Jung's apprentice, HG Baynes (Peter) and they spent a year's sabbatical living at Log Haven. Peter refers to Cary's love of her "shack" in a letter to his daughter.

She remained friends with her first Husband, Jamie de Angulo, a respected linguist. She introduced him to Carl Jung. Jaime took Jung to the pueblo at Taos, NM.

Adolf LaFrenz purchased the property from Cary in 1937. LaFrenz and his wife built four more cottages and began welcoming vacation guests as "Cottages By The Sea."

The property was sold to Nob Hill Properties in 1989 and rented through the La Playa Hotel.

In November 2011 the cottages were purchased, remodeled and receives ongoing TLC as Carmel Cottage Inn.
